Introduction

Christmas is the season to commemorate the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It is so special for all of us that we celebrate it with our loved ones, brethren, and friends.  But do you know that there were a lot of things that happened during the first Christmas that are most of the times being overshadowed by our current traditions in celebrating the season?

When we talk about Christmas, we will always remember the role of Mary and Joseph.  Joseph and Mary were engaged to each other and in the process of their marriage. Then the Lord called both to be part of His plan and purpose in the coming of our Lord Jesus here on earth.  Both were simple people who made a difference and became an embodiment of heartfelt service and obedience to God’s plan.

Outline:

  1. Joseph’s misery and objective plan to address the situation (Matthew 1:18-19)

  2. Joseph’s resilient choice to trust and obey God’s Will (Matthew 1:20-25)

  3. Mary’s calling and amazement of God’s commands (Luke 1:26-31; 34-35)

  4. Mary’s complete obedience and submission to God’s plan (Luke 1:36-38)

  5. Jesus’ authority, sovereignty, and kingdom were established during the first Christmas (Luke 1:32-33)

Life Lessons:

  1. Mary and Joseph were just ordinary people in Nazareth and their circumstances were not ideal. But the Lord still chose them because of their faithfulness and obedient heart toward Him.  Both obeyed and showed their commitment to God’s plan even though they know that they will face a lot of criticism, obstacles, and struggles.

  2. Mary and Joseph fully trusted God’s words.  Even though they have no idea of what was to come, they trusted God with humility.  Like Mary and Joseph, we can remain faithful to God, even if we do not know what the end of the journey will hold for us or what the big picture is. May our faith endure every situation and cause us to surrender to God.

  3. Jesus’ authority and sovereignty are established and shown throughout the Scriptures. Jesus knows our present condition, and nothing is outside of His control. What are the things that you worry of and fear today? Trust that God will sustain and protect us as we follow His calling in our lives.
