Stand Firm in the Lord

A Sermon on Philippians 4:1-9 by Pastor Allan Santos

Introduction

As God’s beloved children, our calling is to stand firm in our faith and relationship with Jesus. To achieve this, we need to battle the desires of our flesh and the influences of this wicked world. Growing in our Christian life and becoming a godly man or woman, require stability and commitment. The Apostle Paul warned the Philippian Church to put an end to disagreements and to work out their differences. He also encouraged them to rejoice regardless of their circumstances and to think what is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, and commendable.

Outline:

  1. Pursue relational harmony with God’s people (vv.1-3)

  2. Exhibiting a heart of gratefulness and rejoicing (vv.4-7)

  3. Loving God with our mind (v.8)

  4. Be persistent in our obedience to God (v.9)

Application from God’s Word:

  1. Paul reminded the Philippian Church to trust in the Lord instead of worrying and being anxious of life circumstances. Living a worry-free life starts with our right view of our great God. Worry is the thought which destroys, breaks, and hurts us as it robs us of trust to our faithful God. What are the things that give you much worry today? Do you believe that God is sovereign and could help you handle them?

  2. Paul encouraged the believers of God’s peace that surpasses all understanding (v.7). This is the peace that comes from God that will guard our minds and hearts. As believers today, we must allow this peace to infiltrate our lives, especially in times when we feel discontent, anxious, and stressed.

  3. Let us obey God’s command to us by being a source of blessing and help to those people who are in need. May we open our hearts, minds, and hands willingly for God’s glory.
